EPIRB Maintenance
Testing EPIRBs
406 MHz EPIRBs can be tested through its built-in self-test function, which is an integral part of the device. Another method for the 406 MHz EPIRBs is to be tested inside a special container designed to prevent the signal from reception by satellites. It is illegal to test a 406 MHz EPIRB by allowing it to transmit distress signals outside of a specialized testing container.
Battery Replacement
406 MHz EPIRBs use a premium variant of lithium batteries designed for long-term low-power consumption during operation. Batteries must be replaced prior to the expiration date indicated on the EPIRB label by using the model specified by the manufacturer. It should also be replaced by a dealer who is approved by the manufacturer. Failure to us the replacement battery suggested by the manufacturer can result in the EPIRB not operating for the duration specified in a distress.
